Men being butterflies
7′ 26″ on Jonathan Harvey CD, Other Presences. SCD28057 Sargasso.
Also as twenty-five minute 8-channel performance at PRESENCES électronique, a festival celebrating 50 years of GRM.Made on 28th March 2008 at the Salle Olivier Messian, Maison de Radio France, 75220 PARIS, France.
This work samples and processes a two minute extract of Marcus Stockhausen’s trumpet playing thanks to Jonathan’s invitation to contribute to the Sargasso release. The discovery of the joy in brass had come earlier in the year through our first meeting thanks to Illan Volkov’s invitation to work with the BBC Scottish symphony orchestra.
I lie by a soft and salty sea. Coconut palms rustle endless in the breeze that blows subliminal sound tracks to my fast fading urban loaded movies. Wham bang and a sudden mass of voices flood in shouting and laughing and I’m sitting up all affronted. There on the sea are one hundred men, alight in the sun and flying. Flying on boards with huge curved wings turning pink with the dipping dipping light. Men being butterflies. It’s the most beautiful thing.
Improvisations from the Pod, January 2008.
