She was Kaffe&#8217;s translator and fixer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaffematthews.net\/sharks\/two-weeks-in-residence-on-santa-cruz-galapagos\/\"> on Santa Cruz,<\/a> introducing her to Captain Tito Menguez, showing her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaffematthews.net\/bahia-tortuga\/\"> Bahia Tortuga\u00a0 <\/a> and the salt lagoon, taking her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaffematthews.net\/sharks\/making-music-with-children-on-isla-isabela\/\">to work on Isabela Island <\/a>and always always translating. He took Kaffe out to sea to show her how he can hypnotize a shark. They went out twice but never found one. However, she did make some great recordings. Locally he is campaigning for better rights for fishermen whose activities have been considerably reduced due international fishing boats in reserve, fish numbers dropping and Class A tourism. He also works with the Migramar team to help them find and tag sharks<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaffematthews.net\/sharks\/the-people\/cesar\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-364\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-364\" title=\"cesar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaffematthews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42012\/01\/cesar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kaffematthews.net\/sharks\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/01\/cesar.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.kaffematthews.net\/sharks\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/01\/cesar-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/migramar.org\/hi\/who-we-are\/cesar-penaherrera\/\">C\u00e9sar Pe\u00f1aherrera<\/a> is the first shark scientist Kaffe had ever met. From Ecuador, he is an Associate researcher at the marine station at the Charles Darwin Foundation, also working within the <a href=\"http:\/\/migramar.org\/hi\/why-we-exist\/\">Migramar<\/a> team to understand <a href=\"http:\/\/migramar.org\/hi\/our-work\/migratory-patterns\/\">migratory patterns<\/a> of sharks. He also introduced Kaffe to the tagging systems they use and the realities of being at sea, catching a shark, tagging it, and returning it to the water unharmed. Working out of <a href=\"http:\/\/biotelemetry.ucdavis.edu\/pages\/hammerhead.asp\">the Biotelemetry department, UC Davis, California,<\/a> she went out to California to meet him and the team April 2011. Having been researching and free-diving with them since the 70&#8217;s, Kaffe was as inspired to meet him as she was to encounter her first shark. He has supplied her with the frequencies he uses to attract and repel hammerheads for the composition.
